What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think NFL/NBA cheerleader? Something to do with bodies? We had the incredible pleasure of hosting a webinar with Meagan Pravden, a former NFL/NBA cheerleader whose story of body shaming was broadcast on national television, on the Dallas Cowboys show “Making the Team”. Meagan shared with us about how she took her body shame and rejection and turned it into helping to heal herself and others on their journeys towards body positivity!
Make sure to check out our Youtube Page to watch the whole inspiring video, but here are some of the highlights of Meagan’s amazing talk:
Journey as a Dallas Cowboy’s Cheerleader
Meagan showed us a compilation of her time with the Dallas Cowboys, via clips from the national television show she had been on! Huge trigger warning for body shaming, but if you are in a place to see it safely, definitely worth the watch, as it is horrifying and sets up the next steps in Meagan’s journey!
What Do Eating Disorders Look Like?
Meagan talked about joining the Buccaneers cheerleading squad at 20, and how her coach was emotionally and verbally abusive. She talks openly about her workout obsession, and how that was dangerous to her health and disordered, but by society’s standard it was accepted and lauded. Bodies change, and especially athletes can’t replicate their bodies when they stop with the really intense focus on their bodies when they stop.
How To Get Your Body Positivity Journey Started
Meagan spoke about the shifts that she made in her social media and her own life, and who she was surrounding herself with in terms of body messaging. She stresses that it takes time, and she talks about being thankful for where she is in her journey now. It’s an everyday choice for Meagan, and it’s so inspiring to hear her talking about it!
